Manchester City started the new season as two-times defending champions after clinching the Premier League title on the final day of the season in the most dramatic fashion, coming from 2-0 down to score three times in six minutes, thereby maintaining their one-point lead over Liverpool. Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United were missing having been relegated to the National League while Stockport County and Grimsby Town returned to the English Football League.
To allow for a break for the World Cup in November/December, the 2022-23 season started early on 22 July.
