coleraine fc crestColeraine finished in a very creditable third place and reached the Irish Cup final to boot. Their reward was a place in the Europa League but a humbling 7-0 defeat in Norway at the hands of FK Haugesund in the first leg of their qualifier brought them back to earth with a resounding bump. With hindsight, introducing a third kit specifically for Europe was a tad over-optimistic and by a cruel irony, it clashed with Haugesund's colours.

Their new kits provider is based in the Republic and supplies a variety of athletic, football and rugby gear.

crusaders fc crestCrusaders finished as runners up last season just two points behind Linfield. A 3-1 win in the first leg of the first qualifying round of the Europa League against FK Liepāja set them up well for the second leg but a 2-0 defeat in the return meant they were eliminated on the away goals rule.

A novel change kit has been introduced while the white and red strip seems to have been retained as a third option. It was worn, for no apparent reason, at Ballymena in the Crues' opening league match.

dungannon swifts fc crestThe Swifts finished last season playing in the relegation section but still were able to join the play-offs for a Europa League place. This was because Linfield qualified twice so one place in the play-offs was passed down the league.

Glenavon

glenavon fc crest Glenavon finished without any silverware and were denied a Europa League place by Ballymena, who beat them 1-0 in the play-off final. They have updated both their strips having been unchanged for the past two seasons. Anyone who follows Northampton Town on the road will recognise the deeply unpleasant change strip.

Glentoran

Second

Designer: Kappa

Sponsor: Bet McLean

glentoran fc crestGlentoran are going through a lean spell at present and once again finished in the bottom half of the table. Work has yet to start on redeveloping the Oval, the club's home since 1892 and has been on hold because the political crisis that brought down the power sharing executive has put government's contribution of £9.2m in doubt.

Glentoran's colours are among the most distinctive in Europe and the idea of creating a new first strip based on a classic from the 1980s is sound enough. However, the end result is far too busy with additional white trim and excessive branding spoiling what would otherwise be an attractive strip. The same might be said of the alternative.

Linfield

Designer: Umbro

Linfield won the double of Premiership and Irish Cup last season and in July they progressed to the second qualifying round of the Champions' League where they earned a lucrative tie with Celtic (who won 6-0 over two legs). Both matches were marred by sectarian incidents.

Their new "home" strip is firmly in the Linfield tradition while the alternative is retained from last season.

warenpoint town fc crestWarrenpoint won the NIFL Championship for the first time in April to secure their return to the Premiership after an absence of just one season. They are now equipped by Adidas and appear to be wearing ivory shorts with white trim, which is something of a novelty. Their change strip is is one of those violently fluorescent colours that really should be confined to hi-viz safety jackets.

(2nd shorts/socks to be confirmed.)
