European Championship 1968 Final Stage

european nations cup 1968 logoUEFA changed the name of the competition and the knock out stages were replaced by group qualifiers, played over the previous two seasons. The 1967 and 1968 British Home Championships served as the qualifying group for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A total of 35 teams entered (only Iceland and Malta declined) and the four finalists were decided by quarter-finals, played over two legs, home and away. Italy were chosen to host the final stage.

Italian football was in the grip of the ultra-defensive catenaccio system and goals were as rare as hen's teeth. After 120 minutes neither team had scored so the match was decided by the toss of a coin. the unfortunate captain of the USSR team, Albert Shesternyov, called incorrectly and Italy advanced to the final.
