Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership 2017-2018

Scottish Premier LeagueCeltic, Aberdeen and Rangers occupied the top three places at the end of last season but Celtic's achievement of finishing unbeaten, 30 points clear of the Dons indicates that the league remains uncompetitive. Rangers humiliating defeat in the First Qualifying Round of the Europa League by a team of part-timers from Luxembourg emphasised that there is still a lot of work to do at Ibrox.

There are no surprises from the Premiership runners-up, just an update to the latest Adidas designs. There is some interesting sublimated detailing, however: diagonal lines on the red shirt and diamonds on the blue alternative. The change strip has stirred things up a bit: many supporters dislike the idea of their team playing in blue, Rangers' colour. The club has defended itself by describing it as "Marseille Blue" and devoting a page in the match programme to examples of blue being worn in the past.

Celtic once again ran away with the title finishing 30 points clear and unbeaten. It's now 50 years since the Lisbon Lions historic victory in the European Cup and the latest strip is modelled on the elegant outfit of the period. Gold trim and commemorative crest are added for extra bling. The second choice, the same design but in two shades of green, looks great. The choice of another shade of green for the third shirt may be clever marketing but it was not going to work very well at Easter Road so last season's pink job was worn instead.

No surprises here, just the latest Puma template with a little bit of red trim at the cuffs. The alternative is intended to pay tribute to one of the founding clubs, Our Boys, although my records suggest this team wore red and black hoops. The Puma version has a textured effect in the navy bands. The third strip, launched ahead of Remembrance Sunday, was in support of the armed forces charity, SSFA, the club's adopted charity for this season.

The Accie's had to play-off against Dundee United last season but managed to keep their place in the Premiership thanks to a single goal. Their new first shirt loses the nasty fuzzy effect from last season and presents us once again with proper, clean hoops. The change strip is an unpleasant melange in two shades of blue and yellow.

Hearts are one of an increasing number clubs returning to Umbro and all power to them. The new first strip includes the sublimated double diamond trim on the shoulders and shorts. The change shirt has a pattern printed into the fabric that represents the cobbles on the streets outside Tyncastle, a neat idea but spoilt by the rather bright shade of light blue chosen. Something a bit more subdued would have looked better with the maroon shorts. The third kit was worn for the first time at Hamilton in September.

It is a shame that Kiliie have opted to wear standard Nike kit rather than bespoke designs but at least this year they have managed to find something that looks reasonably traditional. The change strip is the latest version of Nike's Precision design.

The Steelmen retain their iconic chest band, now augmented with a bit of amber trim and claret epaulets. Claret shorts return. The change kit is very impressive.

The Jags have once again chosen an audacious change strip. It's what they do. Supporters were polled to choose the new first strip although they were only offered two alternatives and the second one was awful.

Mike Ashley has sold his stake in the club and a more equitable deal with Sports Direct means the club now get a fair share of revenue from replica sales. With large numbers of shirts unsold because of a fan boycott, the board has decided to retain the first strip for another season. Details of the change strip were not avaiable until it was worn for the first time against Ross County at the beginning of September while the black option was revealed at the beginning of October.

The Staggies are wearing another interesting navy kit with red and white trim. Just for fun, the front is embossed with a tartan pattern. The white strip is held over from last season.

Joma's Grada design looks very smart here. Elements from each set can be mixed and matched and still look good. Even so, a new yellow strip was needed at Kilmarnock.
