FIFA World Cup 1990 Group C

fifa world cup 1990 posterCoached by the relatively unknown Sebastião Lazaroni, Brazil adopted a defensive approach and although they made it to the next round, they made little impression. Costa Rica, who had qualified for the World Cup for the first time by winning the CONCACEF title in 1989, pulled off two remarkable victories to qualify for the Round of 16. Scotland appeared in the finals for the fifth time in succession but once again failed to get past the group stage.

Four minutes into the second half Cayasso put Costa Rica ahead after the ball was back-heeled to him unmarked and well inside the Scottish penalty area. Scotland struggled to counter the central American's fast, short-passing style throughout.

Another narrow victory put Brazil into the next round but it was now clear that this side would not play the sort of free-flowing, attacking game expected of Brazilian teams.

Costa Rica had brought a striped change strip with them as a tribute to the country's oldest club, CS Libertad, which had recently gone out of business. As this closely resembled Juventus' strip, their Serbian coach decided to wear it in this game to capture support from locals but as the stadium was packed with Brazilian fans it made little difference.

McCall (10') and Johnston (80' pen) revived Scotland's slim hopes although Strömberg put a dent in their goal difference with a late goal.

Scotland would need to beat Brazil for the first time in their history to stand any chance of going through to the next round. With eight minutes left, the game was still 0-0 and they could still entertain the possibility of snatching a winner. At that point Müller was on hand to score from point blank range after Jim Leighton fumbled a shot and the ball ran loose.

Sweden lead at half-time thanks to a goal by Ekström (32') but late in the game, Flores equalised for Costa Rica, wearing their Vecchia Signora outfit once again, and with two minutes left, Medford scored the winner, after a lapse by the Swedish defence left him in the clear with just the goalkeeper to beat.
